Get $25 Gift Certificate for Only $2!!!

Restaurant.com is running their 80% off sale again! You can get a $25 gift certificate to the restaurant of your choice for only $2.00!!! Just enter the code TASTE upon checkout and your $25 gift certificate (normally priced at $10) will be only $2.00. I have used these a number of times since it is the only way we can really afford to eat out. It is really great to pay only $2 and get $25 worth of great restaurant food!

Make sure you double check with the restaurant ahead of time just to make sure they are accepting the gift certificates from Restaurant.com. I had ONE instance where a restaurant said they did not accept these. They didn't get our business (and there were 7 of us!!) But all other places have gladly accepted the gift certificates (they don't know you only paid $2 for them!!). And if you should run into something like this, Restaurant.com will either refund your money or give you credit towards another restaurant gift certificate.

Read all the fine print - it varies from restaurant to restaurant. Some of them require $35 purchase to use $25 gift certificate and most say 18% gratuity automatically added (based on total before discount). Others require $50 food purchase. Just read the details and you will get a great meal for a HUGE discount!

Let me know if you have used these and what you think!!

The Homesteading Carnival - Summer Vacation Edition

View from Bell Rock
I hope you all had a chance to take a summer vacation this year. Perhaps a more frugal one than in previous years, but still an opportunity to spend time as a family, relax, change your routine and do some fun things together. That is what vacation is for us.
Bell Rock - yes, we really climbed this!
This year, thanks to the generosity of a friend or two, we were able to spend a week in Sedona, AZ for under $500 total. I prepared a lot of the food ahead of time and took everything with us - most of it from things already in the freezer or pantry. We were able to stay in a friend's house for the week, and I used a $25 Restaurant.com gift certificate that I paid $2 for to enable my hubby and I to even have a date night out. We even sat through a timeshare sales pitch in order to be able to take our kids to Out of Africa Wildlife Park for FREE! Most of the money we spent was for things we did with our kids, like go to the movies one night, get ice cream a couple of times, go to the top of Mount Agassiz (11,500 feet) on a chair lift and other fun things. My hubby took our son to the very first Cardinals Training Camp Session in Flagstaff open to the public and Cody got his photo with Tim Hightower. We hiked several mountains and trails, and spent a bunch of time just relaxing and playing Wii games with the kids, reading books and watching family movies (no TV there:-)
Lizard Rock
So I am going to share a few photos along with our great articles for this edition of The Homesteading Carnival. Enjoy a brief trip to Sedona, AZ (and surrounding area)!

I'm sure most of you have laughed at this as I did. As a result, I began to wonder what does dinner really cost for my family of 8? So I set a challenge for myself and I figured if I kept it under $5, I was doing good..."

Great FREE Homeschool Resources Weekly

For some time now, I have been subscribed to Homeschool Freebie of the Day which is a website with a daily link to a free homeschooling resource. Especially if you are homeschool little ones, this would be a tremendous thing to sign up for and it is FREE!! You will receive a weekly email letting you know what is coming up each day so you can make sure to check in that day for the ones you are interested in. There are so many different types of resources they provide that I can't even begin to give you a scope. But here are a few samples from this coming week's freebies:

Monday, August 10th - The Perseid Meteor Shower! (links & PDF ebooks)
One of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year occurs Tuesday and Wednesday of this week! Here's all the info you need to get out and enjoy these cosmic fireworks.

Tuesday, August 11th - Building Toy Boats (PDF ebook)
Classic guide to building and sailing your own miniature toy boats and other floating craft.

Wednesday, August 12th -Raggedy Andy Stories (PDF ebook)
The delightful sequel to "Raggedy Ann Stories" featured here two weeks back, with tons of beautiful illustrations and wonderful stories of the Raggedys and their make believe friends.

Thursday, August 13th -Drawing For Beginners (PDF ebook)
A small boy was asked: "How do you draw?" He answered: "I think... and then I draw round my think." This excellent book by Dorothy Furniss is a great introduction to drawing and sketching from life and from your imagination, and the tools you draw with. Lots of great illustrations too.

Friday, August 14th - Songs from Calico Spanish (mp3 audio)

Are your kids learning Spanish this year? A great way to teach them is through these "teaching songs" on the new Calico Spanish CD, "Mi Guitarri". Today we feature three full spanish learning songs from this new collection, plus a PDF guide to Spanish teaching resources. Check it out!

Each of these resources will be available on its specified day at

A Wonderful Vacation!

We are back from our week in Sedona, AZ and we had a wonderful time! We hiked several mountains, went to Slide Rock, went to the top of Mount Agassiz 11,500 ft., visited Out of Africa and did some relaxing. I hope to post pics later today or tomorrow so you can see some of what we did. Hope you all had a good week and I am looking forward to getting back on track with money-saving tips and ideas!
